Barbara L. Nelson

Barbara L. Nelson, 89, of Highland, IN, formerly of Kewanee, died Monday, September 20, 2021, at St. Anthony Majestic Care Home, Crown Point, IN. She was born December 15, 1931, the daughter of Bertram and LeNora (Booker) Rodgers. Barbara married George H. Nelson on August 19, 1951 at the Kewanee First United Methodist Church; he survives. Also surviving includes a daughter, Melanie Nelson Fiddler, Glastonbury, CT; grandsons, Christopher Fiddler, Ryan Fiddler, both of Glastonbury, CT; one brother, Daniel B. Rodgers, Sycamore, IL; two nephews, Steve D. Rodgers, Winfield, IL and James Floyd, Manhattan Beach, CA; two nieces, Marjorie Rodgers (Earl Fredericton), New Brunswick, Canada and Kathy Hirsh, Thousand Oaks, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Helen Rodgers Martinez.Barbara was an English teacher for Hammond Public Schools. In her later years she was a Librarian for the Hammond Public Library. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and the Presbyterian Book Club. Barbara enjoyed cooking and baking bread; she was featured in the Hammond Times for her bread baking. She was an avid bird watcher. She liked traveling to England, Norway and many Elderhostels. She enjoyed their season tickets to the Chicago Bears games in the 50s. She loved entertaining her friends and family.Graveside Services will be 11:00 am on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Kewanee.
