Donald “Don” Koren, 89, of Kewanee, passed away Saturday, November 18, 2023, at Toulon Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Don was born April 28, 1934, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, the son of Nick Selak and Mary Koren. Donald came to Wyoming, IL in 1965. He married his wife Rita Reismeyer on February 27, 1965, in Springfield, Illinois; she preceded him in death on October 16, 2021. They were happily married for 56 years.
Don is survived by one son, Arvin Wayne Thompson, Kewanee; two daughters, Arvilla (Michael) Scollon, St. Charles, IL; and Patricia (Mike) Brockhouse, Chillicothe, IL; five grandchildren, Nicole (Nathan) Lynch, Mitchell Scollon, Linda Thompson, Shelli (James) White, and Curtis Brockhouse; three great-grandchildren, Emily, Evan, and Cole. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a brother, George Koren.
Don was a welder at Pearson’s in Galva and was a carpenter at Stahl’s Lumber in Wyoming. During retirement he worked at First Federal Savings and Loan for 23 ½ years. He was a member of the Saint John Paul II Catholic Church in Kewanee. Don enjoyed bowling, square dancing and traveling. He had a passion for fishing and would venture out anywhere that had water. Don was fond of country music and cherished spending time with his family.
Visitation will be from 9:00 – 10:00 am, Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Golnick-Schueneman Funeral Home. Memorial services will be at 10:00 am, Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the funeral home. Deacon Martin VanMeltebeck will officiate. Burial will be in Wyoming Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Toulon Memory Care or the donor’s choice.
