Karen S. Zimmerman, 84, of Kewanee, passed away Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Allure of Geneseo. Karen was born November 17, 1939, in Kewanee, the daughter of Elmer E. and Minette M. (Lindbeck) McMillan. She attended and graduated from Kewanee High School with the class of 1957. Karen married August “Gus” Zimmerman, Jr. on June 5, 1964, at Saint Peter’s Evangelical Church, Kewanee; he preceded her in death on March 9, 2019.
Karen is survived by one son, August Kevin (Carol) Zimmerman, of Kewanee; a brother, Ron McMillan; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Gus; and a son, Aaron Kirk in 2016.
Karen worked as a Meter Maid for the City of Kewanee. Karen and Gus owned and operated the Kewanee Tastee Freez, and later AKZ Uptown Package Liquors and retired from the AKZ Party Goods Store. She was a member of the Saint Peter’s Evangelical Church. She enjoyed boating on the Illinois River.
A Celebration of Life will be from 2:00 – 5:00 pm, Friday, November 8, 2024, at Cerno’s Bar and Grill. A private family burial will be in Wethersfield Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Henry County Humane Society, Kewanee or The Kewanee Park District, Windmont Park Lighting.
