Virginia E. Aupperle, 93, of Toulon, died Friday, October 13, 2023, at her home. Virginia was born March 9, 1930, in Ross County, Ohio, the daughter of Carl W. and Clara E. (Bay) Edgington.
Viriginia studied conservation at the Ohio Conservation Laboratory in Carroll County, where she took detailed slides during her work. Because of these slides, she was asked to apply to the IFYE. Viriginia was chosen to participate in the program and was able to go to her first choice, Australia. She sailed from San Francisco on Oct. 24 and arrived in Sydney on Nov. 12. While there from Nov. 12, 1959, to April 30, 1960, she lived with 23 host families and participated in their everyday life. Viriginia gave 64 talks to Rotary Clubs, schools, churches, the Country Women’s Association, Rural Youth Clubs and Young Farmer’s Clubs, during her six months abroad. She visited France and Switzerland on her way home. Returning home on the Queen Mary on June 14, 1960. Virginia attended Ohio University, where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.
She married Eldon “Bud” Aupperle, on August 11, 1968, in Ross County, Ohio; he preceded her in death on March 11, 2023.
Virginia worked as a student teacher in a 4th grade classroom at Chippewa Schools, Cleveland, Ohio. After student teaching, she taught 6th grade at Chippewa Schools, Cleveland, Ohio. She was a substitute teacher for 2nd – 8th grade at Frankfort School, Ross County, Ohio. She enjoyed working, her flowers, and gardening. She also enjoyed traveling. Bud and Virginia served their one of a kind “Uncle Bud’s Cider Slush” to many surrounding communities from their little trailer for 25 years!
Virginia is survived by one brother, David Edgington; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Charles (Linda) Edgington and Vernon (Shelba) Edgington; and one niece, Barbara Aupperle.
In accordance with her wishes, a private family memorial service will be held in Illinois. Burial and a graveside service will be at Concord Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Ross County, OH at a later date.
